AMERICAN PSYCHO

Musical version of Bret Easton Ellis's novel, produced by Headlong, directed by Rupert Goold, starring Matt Smith.
N: A cracker. Smith spookily convincing as the psychopathic Patrick Bateman. Broad satire at the expense of 1980s Wall Street and yuppies. Entertaining period details (Walkman, mobile phones the size of bricks). Very slickly choreographed indeed. Es Devlin's design spectacular, with two mini-revolves at either side bringing props and furniture on and off, a false back wall and copious use of projections; a great collection of hideous 80s wigs for the women and equally hideous dresses, either strapless/backless or shoulder-padded. Didn't think much of the original songs, but they helped capture a mood: and the use of period hits was effective.
